Profil / Selbstdarstellung:
The Garment Industries Transparency Initiative (GITI) is a multi-stakeholder initiative which aims to advance the implementation of labour standards in the garment sector through increased transparency and participation. Following the collapse of Rana Plaza, the GITI was initiated in early 2014 under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Peter Eigen, former Chair of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) and Co-Founder of the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform. The GITI builds upon the successful procedural model of the EITI. The HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform acts as the International Secretariat of the initiative. Transparency: The GITI will produce reliable, publicly accessible and generally accepted information in form of regular country reports as product of a consultative process. The credibility of this information is enhanced through a multi-stakeholder deliberative process that includes government, private sector, and civil society representatives.
In both the social and economic spheres, GITI and the Partnership share the aim of implementing internationally agreed standards in the producer countries. GITI can support the Partnership as it applies its implementation strategy in the textile industries of selected countries as follows: 1. A multi-stakeholder dialogue forum brings together the three main national actors for governance in the textile industry, creates an overview of the relevant issues in the national textile sector, and provides the Partnership with a platform for deliberation. 2. A body that can partially verify whether the implementation requirements of the Partnership’s members have been met in significant textile producing countries. 3. A nationally anchored steering mechanism for sector-specific approaches and targeted capacity building measures. 4. Mechanisms that contribute to the transparency of the supply chain in tier one. 5. Support for the Partnership’s intended thematic priorities.
