Sustainable chemical and environmental management in the textile sector in Asia

Objective

The partnership initiative aims to achieve lasting improvements in the field of chemical management. To this end, it will work to achieve a sustainable improvement in chemical management in selected production facilities using wet processing in Bangladesh and China. This includes raising awareness in producer countries and at global level of the importance of proper chemical and environmental management and using dialogue and discussion formats to encourage producers to substitute non-hazardous substances for hazardous chemicals. It also aims to encourage innovation and research on improved substrates.

Short description

The partnership initiative consists of three interlinked modules:

  1. Awareness raising for stakeholders through participatory workshops
  2. Providing and facilitating access to training and encouraging producers to replace hazardous chemicals and embrace innovations regarding substrates with the assistance of research institutions
  3. Cooperation arrangements with the chemical industry

The members of the partnership initiative get involved in one or more of the three modules and contribute their own specific expertise, thus helping achieve sustainable chemical and environmental management in the textile sector. The best results can be achieved if the strengths and capacities of the individual actors are combined and the activities under the three individual modules interlinked and harmonised. Agreement on a common approach and communication with external suppliers generate synergy and make the measures more effective.

Achievements

The concept produced by the working group on chemicals was approved by the partnership bodies, the pre-selection committee and the steering committee in May 2017 and will now be implemented. China and Bangladesh are earmarked as the first priority countries for implementation. Other interested countries and projects in the field of chemical management have already been networked with the partnership activities. Currently, participants are developing target-group-specific concepts and materials to facilitate political dialogue, the dissemination of technical knowledge, awareness raising and training at factory level. They are taking into account relevant work already undertaken by other organisations and initiatives.
