Promotion of Social and Environmental Standards in Industry III in Bangladesh

Objective

National-, privat-sector- and civil society actors make use of strengthened capacities, which are the basis for the implementation of a sustainable economic growth in the textile, clothing and leather industries of Bangladesh.

Short description

In Bangladesh the textile, garment and leather industry is crucial for the economic development of the country. In total it employs almost five million people, of which approximately 80% are women. The core issue is that national environmental standards, labour laws and international standards are met insufficiantly by the factories of the textile, garment and leather industry. The project follows a multi-level and multi-stakeholder approach, which includes a cooperation with ministries and public authorities, trade associations and companies as well as with non-governmental organisations. The strategy of the project is to strengthen capacities, which are essential for the compliance of social and environmental standards, with the help of shared responsibility models. The project is funded by the Federal German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development.

Achievements

The follow-up measure ties in with the work of the previous project. Since 2010 the project has advised more than 780 factories concerning the improvement of social and environmental standards. In 20 women cafés about 200,000 female factory workers got sensitized to their labour rights and about 10,000 labour desputes were resolved. With the help of an “inclusive job center” people with discapacities are supported to find an adequate profession. Since 2015, 193 people were provided with an apprenticeship in the textile industry and about 150 with a job. In cooperation with ILO the project educates 300 labour inspectors. A training program for factory workers on the operation of wastewater treatment plants was developed and solutions for the disposal of clearing slodge, which is contaminated with heavy metals were introduced. In the third phase of the project the cooperation between governmental, private and civil society actors is enhanced through shared reponsibility models.
