Diversification, sustainability examination and commercialisation
of silkworm products and catch crops in Yilong

Objective

  • Establishing of agricultural model farms for sustainable and lucrative products for demonstration and communication.
  • Enhancing of reputation and integrity Chinese organic products on the local as well as on the international market.
  • Traceable improvement of Co2 binding due to sustainable agriculture.  

Short description

  • Identification of challenges and practices in workshops and trainings with farmers in six Villages for now; Establishing of best practice in demonstration farms; Compost production on village level; `Train-the trainer` programmes; commercialisation of by-products as organic products; documentation and communication.
  • Target groups of the Initiative are aprox. 250 farmer families in six villages with the involvement of the local government and potential clients of the ecological by-products, as well as German purchaser of organic silk products.
  • The goal is the assurance and extension of sustainable production of silk filaments.
  • Within the launch of new income and marketing perspectives, the farmer’s payment increases as well as the transparency and credibility of organic products from Yilong. On top synergies with other projects and sustainability, goals of the Chinese government will increase.

Achievements

  • A feasibility study of the current situation and various improvement scenarios were made by using a basic data collection and relevance analysis. It turned out that labour and costs are a huge limiting factor.
  • The technical and investment needs have been identified to reduce the labour input to achieve the desired results.
  • The nature and form of training needs of farmers have been identified – aspired are a mix of interactive theory, training videos, and hands-on field trainings. Here, the demonstration companies play a decisive role.
  • So far, about 100 farmers have been reached through the workshops and field trainings.
