Supplier Decarbonization

The challenge
It is estimated that the textile industry is responsible for 10 % of global CO2 emissions. The majority of emissions are generated during energy production and production in the supply chains. However, these emissions happen mostly outside the scope of European brands and manufacturers. Data on emissions of the value chain (so-called Scope 3 emissions) are hardly available. As they cannot be directly assigned to a specific company, there are few incentives and obligations for brands to reduce them. However, the population in the production countries is doubly affected by the negative impact of emissions: due to climate change-related extreme weather phenomena on one hand and air pollution in the vicinity of textile factories on the other.
Our approach
As part of the Partnership Initiative Supplier Decarbonization, employees from around 50 supplier companies of participating Partnership members in Bangladesh and Pakistan are trained in Climate Action Trainings (CAT). They create their own energy balance. Having completed those, the companies will set long-term reduction targets for their emissions. Furthermore, a study on the health effects of air pollution on the local population is being carried out as part of the initiative.
Our goals
The long-term goal of the Partnership Initiative is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the textile supply chain. Thanks to the training courses, the people in charge at the participating production companies will be aware of the climate impact of textile production and able to assess the emissions of their operations. The trained employees will implement up to three energy-saving measures per company. In addition, the effects of air pollution on the neighboring population will be made visible through the study. Based on the data collected, suitable remedial mechanisms can then be developed.
Goal: 150
