Living Wage Lab 2.0

The challenge

A living wage covers the living costs of workers and their dependent family members and enables adequate reserves for emergency situations. However, these wages are often not paid in the textile production countries. Although there are fixed minimum wages, these are often too low to guarantee workers and their families a decent standard of living.

Our approach

The Partnership Initiative aims to promote the payment of living wages in the textile industry and builds on the results of the predecessor project Living Wage Lab 1.0. Within the first project, the focus was on reviewing purchasing practices, collecting wage data and calculating wage gaps as well as exchanging information with the nominated producers. Now the focus is on cooperation with producers and the promotion of social dialogue in three implementing countries. Capacity building measures on the ground are intended to strengthen textile workers in the exercise of their rights. In addition, the member companies are working on the development of individual living wage strategies and the integration of living wages into their purchasing processes within the framework of peer learning formats.

Our goals

The objective of the second phase is to reduce the gap between the wages currently paid and the living wages for textile workers in the production facilities of the participating Partnership members. Making purchasing practices more responsible is an important prerequisite for this.
