Organic Cotton

The challenge

Worldwide, around 81% of the natural fibres processed in the textile industry are cotton. A large proportion of this is grown in India, often using conventional cultivation methods. However, these are associated with many problems. The ecological risks include, for example, soil erosion, partly due to the use of toxic chemicals. In addition, working conditions in cotton fields are often poor: due to a lack of protective equipment, farmers come into direct contact with harmful chemicals. Exploitation, child labour and inadequate pay are also common abuses.

Our approach

In order to overcome the social, ecological and economic challenges of cotton cultivation, the Textiles Partnership is promoting the conversion to organic cultivation in India. To this end, capacity building measures are being implemented and GMO-free seed is being provided. To improve working conditions, training materials on decent work have been developed and multipliers trained. The members of the Textiles Partnership involved in the project provide support in the form of know-how, purchase guarantees for the cotton grown and a premium payment.

Our goals

The Partnership Initiative contributes to the development of a fair, environmentally friendly and economically viable supply chain for organic cotton and helps to increase the offer of organic cotton. Organic cotton producers and those in the process of converting to organic farming are to be supported in the conversion process with the help of the measures and their business activities are to be strengthened in the long term.
